One of the most common questions we hear from patients is:
“Will I still need to wear glasses after cataract surgery?”

The short answer? Not necessarily. Thanks to advancements in lens implant technology, many patients can reduce — or even eliminate — their dependence on glasses after surgery.

At Pacific Eye Institute, our goal is to restore your vision and tailor the outcome to your lifestyle and visual goals. A key part of this process involves selecting the right intraocular lens (IOL).

Standard Intraocular Lens (IOL):

If you choose a standard monofocal lens implant, which is typically covered by insurance, your vision will likely be corrected at one distance — either near or far.
You may still need glasses for tasks such as:

  • Reading
  • Using a computer
  • Driving (if near vision is corrected)

Monofocal IOLs

provide excellent vision at a single distance but do not correct all ranges of vision. Many patients opt to have their distance vision corrected and then use reading glasses as needed.

Premium Lens Implants: Reduce or Eliminate Your Need for Glasses

For patients who want to maximize their visual independence, advanced technology lenses (also known as premium IOLs) are available.

These include:

  • Multifocal IOLs: Provide clear vision at near, intermediate, and distance ranges.
  • Extended Depth-of-Focus (EDOF) IOLs: Offer seamless transitions between distances, ideal for computer users and active lifestyles.
  • Toric IOLs: Designed to correct astigmatism.

While these lenses involve an out-of-pocket cost, many patients feel the investment is worth the freedom from glasses, especially for hobbies like golf, hiking, traveling, or simply reading without readers.
